Australian herbalist Karen Jones, who has been working in the region for decades, has spoken out about how she and her colleagues are facing a backlash from local residents, who are now calling for the herbalists to be deported from Australia.
In a series of posts on her blog and Facebook, Ms Jones wrote: I have had some calls from my colleagues and friends in the South Australian Government, and others from people who have called and said they will take action against my business if we are allowed to remain here.
This is a really scary time for me and my family, who have been here for over 100 years, but I don’t want my business to go any further.
I am so grateful to have been able to help these communities in my country through this time, but it is absolutely devastating for me to see that I am now a target for people who want to hurt my business.
One local resident told ABC Rural they were calling for Ms Jones to be jailed, and another threatened to “get rid of” her if she did not stop the herbalist.
The Australian Government says it will not allow the herbalis to stay in Australia, saying they are “not licensed and have no authority over our health system”.
Ms Jones says the local government has threatened to take away her business if she does not change her plans.
“We are the only licensed and regulated herbalist in Australia and our business will be in limbo for the foreseeable future, so if they are not willing to respect our right to be here, we will have no choice but to go and look for a new home,” she said.
Ms Edwards, who works as an herbalist herself, told the ABC she believes the local authorities are “obsessed with their own political agenda”.
“They are trying to keep us out of their own country,” she added.
Local authorities in South Australia say herbalists can remain in the country until their licences expire.
ABC Rural contacted Ms Jones for comment but did not receive a response by the time of publication.
